![]() In fact, it reminds me of the Xbox 360's directional pad, which isn't a compliment. There's software to adjust sensitivity and dead zones, but you can't do much about the physical feel. They're a bit easier to flick around in comparison, but I quickly grew used to them. The sticks on the Steam Deck feel sturdy, while the ones on the Ally feel looser and less rugged. The thumbsticks leave something to be desired. The menu buttons require a harder press, but they're better than the flat buttons on the Steam Deck. On our second review unit, the face buttons intermittently stick and the right bumper occasionally squeaks, though Asus says it knows about this and that it won't be an issue on Ally handhelds that ship to customers. The Ally's face buttons are slightly flatter than the ones on an Xbox controller, and they're clickier and a bit larger than the ones on the Steam Deck, but they worked and I found them comfortable enough. But in some cases, bigger might be better. ![]() Valve's handheld gaming PC is a behemoth that makes the Ally look small in comparison. Perhaps the most important aspect of the ROG Ally's design is that it's smaller than the Steam Deck. It's good to see Asus knocking at Valve's door, even if Windows 11 isn't exactly meant to be stuffed into a design like this. That said, the Ally shows up the Steam Deck tremendously with its bright 1920 x 1080 screen, which is also faster at 120 Hz, though those specs raise questions about battery life. SteamOS is still king when it comes to useability on a PC gaming handheld. And while Asus’ is largely very good, it’s not perfect. But Asus had to build on top of Microsoft’s OS with its Armoury Crate SE software. Windows 11 brings many benefits - basically every game you'd want to play is compatible without emulation, and game streaming works great. The first major player to arrive is Asus, partnering with Microsoft and AMD for the ROG Ally ($699.99 as tested) with Windows 11 and new Ryzen Z1 chips - including the top-end Z1 Extreme in our review unit. ( Aya Neo and similar companies have made plenty, but they're not exactly household names). Ever since Valve's Steam Deck showed what a handheld gaming PC was truly capable of, we’ve been wondering when a high-end Windows-based competitor would show up. ![]()

![]() ![]() I use this app predominantly for scanning books for research, but the app gets overwhelmed and is liable to crash the larger the file size gets. That said, there are some problems I’d like to see fixed. I honestly like this scanning app a lot the scans are super fast, the auto detected borders are fairly accurate, and the end product is a great balance between quality and file size. It’s WILD that this is free to use with no ads? Like the reason I am back on the app store to write this is bc I was sure I must have paid for it at some point but NOPE. I know this review sounds like a marketing campaign but I was just talking with a friend about how idk what I’d do without Scannable. I normally email them to myself so I can submit on my computer but that is an easy built in function. I have literally never seen another app that lets you do that. It automatically takes the picture but lets you adjust the edges afterwards? And not just edge by edge, you can move each individual corner so you get the best view of your page. Scannable is super easy to make sure your papers are crisp and readable. I’ve had classes where people get no credit on assignments because their scans were poor. No professor wants physical papers anymore, it’s all about uploading scans. I’ve used it every single night for the past year, scanning homework assignments. Scannable is maybe my most used app ever. Why do companies even use fax machines anymore? Now, combined with cloud storage, a signing app like CudaSign, and email, it has allowed me to recycle paperwork immediately and free myself from clutter, scanners, and fax machines. I used to carry around docs, waiting for a time I was near a scanner or fax. ![]() One minor annoyance is that, for some reason, the app will occasionally show the tutorial even when I haven't updated it and have been using it for months. The quick toggle between PDF and image is also great. I like that it keeps copies of prior scans in case I need to go back. It does sometimes (rarely) crash, but I have never lost any images. It would be nice to be able to select all the options you want to do from one screen, rather than go back and select a new option each time. Then I "share" to my Google Drive to store in the cloud, "share" to iBooks or GoodReader to have on my phone, "share" to CudaSign if I need to sign it first, and/or "send" as an email attachment, and I love that I can do all of the above. In 1808, their mother died, and this was especially hard on Jacob as he took the position of father figure, while also trying to be a brother. During the Napoleonic Wars, Jacob interrupted his studies to serve the Hessian War Commission. While Jacob studied literature and took care of their siblings, Wilhelm continued on to receive his degree in law at Marburg. Once Jacob returned to Kassel in 1806, he adopted his brother's passion and changed his focus from law to German literature. While he was gone, Wilhelm became very interested in German literature and started collecting books. Savigny asked Jacob to join him in Paris as an assistant, and Jacob went with him for a year. ![]() Throughout their time at university, the brothers became quite close with Savigny and were able to use his personal library as they became interested in German law, history, and folklore. He became a prominent personal and professional influence on the brothers. Wilhelm joined Jacob at the university, and Jacob drew the attention of Professor Friedrich Carl von Savigny, founder of its historical school of law. Jacob attended the university first and showed proof of his hard work ethic and quick intelligence. Most of the students received stipends even though they were the richest in the state. They particularly needed this dispensation because their social standing at the time was not high enough to have normal admittance. Both were given special dispensations for studying law at the University of Marburg. Wilhelm contracted asthma and scarlet fever, which delayed his graduation by one year although he was also head of his class. After four years of rigorous schooling, Jacob graduated head of his class in 1802. They also shared the same bed and room at school. They studied more than twelve hours a day and established similar work habits. The two became intent on becoming the best students at Lyzeum, since they wanted to live up to their deceased father. Shortly after attending Lyzeum, their grandfather died and they were again left to themselves to support their family in the future. In school, their grandfather wrote to them saying that because of their current situation, they needed to apply themselves industriously to secure their future welfare. After downsizing their home because of financial reasons, Henriette sent Jacob and Wilhelm to study at the prestigious high school, Lyzeum, in Kassel. At the age of 11, Jacob was compelled to be head of the household and provide for his family. ![]() This was a tragic time for the Grimms because the family lost all financial support and relied on their aunt, Henriette Zimmer, and grandfather, Johann Hermann Zimmer. It even works transparently with remote mount over ftps thanks to KIO. And for things that are better done using a shell, you have a terminal at your fingertips anytime anywhere with all your settings from Konsole (the actual terminal app) thanks to the fantastic KParts framework. Dolphin is probably one of my favorite piece of software today. Switching from managing files in the terminal to using Dolphin has been an amazing experience. It was a bit of a pain at the beginning, so my first move was to configure everything so that my usual key bindings worked again, but I quickly found that I could be as efficient and at ease as I was before using KDE Apps as they were intended to be used (I even switched from doing my emails in Emacs to using a graphical email client!). So I read a bit, compared the two, and decided to give a try to KDE. My environment consisted in Openbox as a window manager, rxvt-unicode as a terminal with Bash as a shell, and then mostly Emacs and Firefox (considering only graphical programs).Ī few years ago, maybe 2 or 3 I'm not sure, I decided to try to experience Linux the way "muggles" do, because I was always telling people to use it but I actually never properly used what they would if they followed my advice, i.e., Gnome or KDE. Once on Linux, I didn't even bother to install a file manager at all, I just kept using the terminal. At this time on Mac OS X I was barely using the Finder at all, I spent all my time in the Terminal and managed my files from there. I switched from Mac OS X to Linux (Debian) a bit more than 15 years ago. Hopefully the file selection dialogue then isn't totally unrelated from a UI point of view. a "file system interface", probably spatial and a more abstracted powerful file manager could and should co-exist. Personally, I'd even make the argument that they've become worse at times and that they're not even in the same niche, i.e. I personally wouldn't consider the Win 11 explorer to be that more usable than winfile.exe, but people have different thresholds. Is it because the system apps have gotten better? Maaaybe. Is it because file usage in general has declined? Generally mabye, but not in that target demographic. I rarely see that these days, both from regular users and my fellow software developers. Next to image viewers probably one of the most common third party tools.
